Thoughts

Life is much duller without you, and Christmas has lost its sparkle. I miss you so much. Thank you for all the wonderful memories. But I wish we could make some more with you. Love you always. PJ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

With Evelyn we knew Gall in Sri Lanka and shared Raki and photos with wonderful people on the beach. We had the amazing good fortune to go up country and visit the tea plantations at Elpitiya and Bogawantalawa. At Elpitiya, at a crucial moment when we needed ballast in the back of the bus to save us from a big drop, Evelyn’s faith in driver Denison finally vanished (she didn’t like him from the start but was stoically silent in her way…). She got out, dragged Brian with her and reduced our traction (actually not much anyway, she wasn’t much use as ballast) to a critical point. We survived to play scrabble in shorts in the Sri Lankan highlands, freezing never being much of a problem for the Aberdonian. It was a cold night. At Bogawantalawa, the staff in the Bungalow were keen to impress but Evelyn refused to put them to any trouble at all. While they were having a smoke she stole into the kitchen and inventoried the freezer to report back on meal options that wouldn’t stress the cook. She didn’t really make a very good colonial…. She was distraught a couple of years later at Christmas as we were sat comfortably and helplessly in Preston watching the same beach folk fight for their lives before the Tsunami. These were experiences that I think she was never expecting to have but which affected her profoundly.
